Prisoners in tents idea “ridiculous”
The Department of Corrections is rubbishing suggestions from the Sensible Sentencing Trust that prisoners should be housed in tents.
It comes after 113 Hawke’s Bay Prison inmates have been relocated to other facilities, because their units were mouldy.
Sensible Sentencing Trust spokesman Garth McVicar says Corrections missed the perfect opportunity to save money and trial tent prisons, which have been used in the United States.
Corrections Manager Service Support Karen Urwin says the idea is ridiculous. She says housing medium to high security prisoners in tents raises severe safety issues.

Umm, I have an idea. These prisoners should have NOT be relocated and they should have been made to clean their cells of the mould — the old fashioned way: bucket of water and soap and knee pads. That would solve the problem of relocation and save the taxpayers money.
Corrections Manager Service Support Karen Urwin says using tents is a ridiculous idea. I agree. In the states, they have these things called Assault Rifles.
What do we have?
A baton.
I wish we could arm ourselves. The criminals do.
